The National Market Information System (NMIS) provides timely, accurate and relevant market information for agricultural commodities to all value chain actors. The ATI collaborates with the Ministry of Trade and Regional Integration, Federal Cooperative Agency and the seven regional Bureaus of trade (Amhara, Oromia, Sidama, South Ethiopia, Southwest Ethiopia, Central Ethiopia, and Tigray) to design and implement this platform.
The NMIS has four main components. Data Collection involves gathering weekly market data from 311 marketplaces, entered into the system platform by government woreda-level data enumerators using the ODK mobile application in three local languages: Amharic, Afan Oromo, and Tigrigna. Data Validation ensures market data accuracy through georeferencing, automated error checks, weekly data comparisons, and surprise market visits. Data Analysis is performed by the system, which conducts both basic (average, mean, range, and mode) and advanced (forecasting and trend) analyses. Finally, Data Dissemination involves sharing validated market information via 6077 IVR, web, and email.
The system NMIS collects, validates and disseminates weekly market data on 19 agricultural commodities (cereals, pulses, oilseeds, fruit, and vegetables) from 311 selected marketplaces across 7 regions. It uses ODK mobile application for collecting and entering the data to the central database and then disseminates the validated information through 6077 IVR, web and email to all users across the country in three local languages which are Amharic, Afan Oromo and Tigrigna.
